Today I finished reading Looking for Alaska by John Green. My mom happened to be a few feet away and asked if it had a sad ending. I found this a very strange question to ask of a book that she has no interest in reading. And mostly because I don't classify my books that way. I don't think of this book ending happy and this one sad. Sure there are Comedies and Tragedies, but the book is not in the ending. A book is composed of every sentence and paragraph strung together in a logical and poetic manner and so it ends in a logical and poetic manner exactly where its meant to end. It was the same way with A Tale of Two Cities. My teacher asked us to write a paper over why Sydney was a tragic figure. I saw it completely opposite. Sydney was a hero. He sacrificed his life so that the woman he loved could live a long and happy marriage with a man who he despised. My mother wouldn't understand this. She would still ask if the ending was sad.
