Do you remember the first time we met? I don't. I try real hard but the memory never forms. You always say I forget the most important parts.
Do you remember the first time we touched? Innocently enough as you handed me a root beer because I was afraid to try alcohol. You had ginger ale.
Do you remember the first time we kissed? I got so nervous I nearly fell off of my bed. You grabbed me and promised not to let me fall. You and I both know I already had.
Do you remember why I had to leave? I told you next to that tree we never carved our names into. You just smiled

car idling by the curb. both of us not saying anything neither wanting to leave she's expecting something her eyes are windows I can't give it to her I crack a joke she doesn't laugh I need to be more serious I lean towards her an open invitation she leans back a rejection letter what does she want neither of us actually know and so another night left in limbo

Creating Dynamic CharactersWe've all read it, and we've all written it: a character who simply falls flat on the page. Sure, they're your baby, but after a while, you realize what everyone is saying is true. They're a cardboard cut out, a description of flowing tresses without a soul. And no matter how beautiful your leading lady or how dashing your hero, no one will care if they fall off a cliff and die unless they built a connection with them. Sure, you can pity a paper doll, but you empathize with a character because of what's inside them that makes them human (or dragon or space alien). You have to give them a soul.
